Here's to You Desmond and Molly Jones

Brisbane's southern-siders have another reason to get up in the morning. Desmond and Molly Jones an eclectic eatery has opened up on Stanley St, Woolloongabba, in one of the great terraces, just a stones throw from C'est Bon and Heinz Butcher.

My friend Astrid and I arrived on a Saturday afternoon with a craving for something sweet. The footpath was littered with low set tables and content diners. The interior is chicly reminiscent of That 70s Show with rendered brick, retro red wall paper, Danish inspired furniture, table tops made of sawn off doors and old school board games.

As we walked to the counter, we overheard one customer commenting on the amazing homemade sausage rolls – which did look delicious. We decided to share the Vanilla Cake, after it was recommended to me by my mother  on a visit earlier that week, and two choc chip cookies. I also indulged in a chocolate milkshake.

The place was packed so we took our seat on the back couch, complete with cowhide cushions and set up a game of Cluedo on the vintage glass coffee table - turns out it was Miss Scarlett in the Dining Room with a Dagger. My milkshake was like an explosion of chocolate, which unfortunately ended sooner than I had hoped as I greedily slurped it down. Astrid eagerly dipped her moist cookies into her coffee. Then our giant slab of delicious Vanilla cake arrived with a dollop of homemade cream.  We polished that off very quickly, despite the generous portion size.

Don’t expect big bacon and eggs style breakfasts, this place is more about simple, homemade and inventive food done well. Everything on the menu is less than $10. And there are lots of little bits of pieces to choose from and nibble at. Effi's pastitsio (Greek lasagne made with penne rather than flat sheets of lasagne, layered with minced meat, strong cheese and a thick creamy sauce for $8.50) is a real favourite, you’ve got to get in quick for that. For those of you with a sweet tooth, try the chocolate raspberry cake ($5.80). Or for a light breakfast try the famous crumpets with raspberry butter ($4.80), where fresh raspberries are crushed into big hunks of butter – DELICIOUS!!

Overall, a cool and scrumptious cafĂ©.  A very welcomed addition to the ever-expanding Woolloongabba dining precinct.  I’ve been thinking about the sausage rolls ever since so I will definitely be returning, very soon, for another round of Cluedo and a mouth-watering snack.
